Watch_dogs 2’s online modes are DEDSEC-sy

With the hacker subject matter, it was inevitable that the first Watch_dogs would include some interesting multiplayer ideas. Unique features like Hacker Invasion where you had to track down other players who’d hopped into your single-player game were great fun, and the sequel evolves those concepts into something even more solid and entertaining. Check out the following trailer for an overview, and read on for more!

As long as you’re playing online (which is optional), there’s always a chance to meet other players. While wandering through the game, your world will be seamlessly overlapping with that of other players, and you’ll be able to see those players going about their business. You’re free to ignore them and carry on playing solo, but you can choose to join up to take on specific co-op missions or just hang out and do whatever it is people do in San Francisco. Maybe some co-operative honking at the sea lions near Fisherman’s Wharf? HONK HONK.

Why not go on a romantic sailing trip with your co-op partner? Lead a walking tour? It's like a vritual city break!

There are, of course, other multiplayer modes. Hacker Invasion from the first Watch_dogs returns, where players invade your game and attempt to stay close enough to hack you without you finding them. The new tools and hacking skills added for the sequel make this a more balanced and open challenges – hackers can’t camp as easily when the victim can sniff them out with a remote controlled flying drone.

Next up is Bounty Hunter. Far from being a mode in which you search the city for chocolate-covered coconut confections or premium kitchen towel, this is something that kicks in when you make the cops really angry. Instead of just throwing more and more AI at you, the game invites up to three other players into your game to hunt you down for a reward. Of course, should you take the fight back to those players, you’ll get rewards too – so you might choose to initiate the chase yourself by using your phone to hack your own wanted level.

As you'd expect, your hacking abilities cross over into multiplayer and co-op modes. Here the player distracts the bad guys by disrupting their communications, while Player 2 starts stealthily taking them down.

As these multiplayer modes cross into your single player world, all the rewards from them do too. These come in the shape of additional “followers” for DEDSEC (the games progression mechanic) as well as your placement on online leaderboards which can earn you a variety of cosmetic rewards.
