Some F/A-18D two-seat Hornets are configured as the F/A-18D (RC) reconnaissance version, substituting the gun with a pallet-mounted electro-optical suite recording onto video tape.

F/A-18C is a version having synthetic aperture ground mapping radar. This ground mapping capability permits crews to locate and attack targets in adverse weather and poor visibility and improves bombing accuracy.
