During the PlayStation Paris Games Week Conference this afternoon, a new co-op trailer premiered for Far Cry 5. Look, here it is right now!
While you’re busy liberating the beleaguered citizens of Hope County, Montana from The Project at Eden’s Gate, you won’t be limited to assistance from Guns for Hire (such as Nick Rye) or Fangs for Hire (such as Boomer). You’ll also be able to turn to a Friend for Hire.
This will give you the chance to play through the entire campaign in online co-op. Or maybe just sack off all that cult nonsense and kick back for some co-operative fishin’ and huntin’ – the choice is yours.
Once you’re past the game’s tutorial, you can call in an online friend at any time. As you may remember, the game has you playing as you create your own character, and friends will appear as their character when they hop into your game. Friends will be able to seamlessly drop in and out, and you’ll be in constant voice chat communication. You’ll also be able to share ammo and health packs, and can even turn on friendly fire if you fancy engaging in some character building trust exercises.
With a friend at your side, you’ll still play at your pace: only you (the hosting player) will be able to accept missions, recruit and command Guns or Fangs for Hire, and keep the progress made in the world. So what’s in it for your chum? Well, aside from enjoying your doubtless sparkling company and high-level banter, they’ll get to keep all their player progression, along with any cash, guns, perks, or loot they earn along the way (aside from items gained through missions.) The game will even prevent straggling, taking account of each player’s position and respawning you closer together if someone wanders too far away (meaning your friend will have no choice but to listen to your “hilarious” Far Cry 5 fishing anecdotes.) There’s no open match-making, so you can only play with people on your friends list – but, then, it’s called Friend for Hire, not Random for Rent. For lone wolf introverts, the feature can be switched off entirely.
Far Cry 5 launches on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on the 27th of February. For more info on the game, check out our previous coverage, and stay tuned to Ubisoft Blog for all the latest.
