Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag – Aveline Returns

The star of Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation will return to the series in Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag. Aveline de Grandpré will appear in a series of missions found exclusively in PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 copies of the game. Jill Murray, writer of Liberation, has also returned to pen the continuation of Aveline’s tale.

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Aveline Returns

Aveline’s missions in Black Flag pick up a ways after her story in Liberation ends. “It’s a ways forward so Aveline is a bit older,” Lead Writer Darby McDevitt explains. “It’s not directly related to the end of her story. If Assassin’s Creed IV is like a novel, Aveline’s missions are like a short story.” Providing about an hour of exclusive content, Aveline’s narrative is broken up into three missions, according to Game Director Ashraf Ismail.

McDevitt explained during the San Diego Comic Con panel that these missions are made possible thanks to some of Abstergo’s Animus upgrades. Abstergo Entertainment has been digging through genetic memories of the Assassin’s, supposedly in the search for a good product. “The present-day is set in Abstergo Entertainment – which is this fun, hip company to work for… at first,” McDevitt says. “You are able to access the Aveline stuff because your coworkers are working on retrieving different genetic memories from all kinds of different people.” Of course, this being Abstergo, there’s something much darker at play.

i think that makes no sense because after the copies sold of ac3 liberation you can make another one to get even more copies sold also i think ac4 is going to be a big hit so why would you do this

Aimon 5pts

I think it's kind of stupid that it will only be available for Sony consoles; all of my AC games are on 360 and since an HD-version of Liberation is planned for Xbox Live, this means you won't be able to play this extra mission unless you have a PS3/PS4.

Vincent 5pts

lol with the "OMG my console doesn't get what the kids next door got! i will hate it and no one should be with me!" and "this money-oriented company should stop doing this!". Every single thing those companies do is for money, they don't care even the slightest bit that you like it or not as long as money keep flowing. Only tiny fraction, insignificant amount of people in the entertainment world think " i will not buy this game because the other black box have 1-2 hours additional, side story content that doesn't directly related to the main story!" get over it

Wesley444 5pts

PS3 gets free Aveline missions because Aveline is a PSVITA character xbox 360 or pc dont know this assassin PSVITA players like me knows her thats the reason why btw xbox 360 and xbox one are getting EXCLUSIVE the division content. Oh thats from Ubisoft so stop freaking hate Xbox freaks!

Matt 5pts

Alright, look. there is no reason to complain about this as Sony I am quite sure owns Aveline. that is why she appers in Black flag. Not only that, but as a ps3 ac player, you are not missing anything it does not effect the story in any way shape or form. Also the claimed 60 minutes of gameplay is a lot closer to 30 and is never very interesting.

Ilokin 5pts

No reason to hate on DEAFATHEIST, what he says is true. Exclusive content for one system isn't fair, and I play AC on a PS3.

SISD 5pts

This seems to be one of the many cases of people forgetting that Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series, like all other franchises, 1st or 3rd Party, in the gaming industry or not, is a FRANCHISE. In other words, Ubisoft is a company that aims for profit, and how could you blame them for that? They need profit to exist and produce, and if a possible partnership with Sony gives them something extra, who are we to judge?

People have to understand that Sony, Microsoft, 3rd Party companies etc. are a part of a global gaming market that is predicted to reach $91 billion by 2015. [1] Competition is as inevitable as the rain, especially between the two industry-ruling companies Sony and Microsoft.

These partnerships therefore have (almost) nothing to do with favouritism, but with economy. And they are nothing special either, a couple of months ago, ''Microsoft and EA have announced a new "strategic" partnership that includes Xbox One receiving exclusive FIFA 14 content.''[2]

I'm super excited with this game since I first got hooked on AC3 and really happy to play as Aveline cause I didn't have a PSP but I really want to know what happens to Connor. His story was not complete no what anyone says,I just want to see some closer for him also the DLC doesn't count. Just a fan rant, sorry but not sorry :/

Max 5pts

Will this extra content be free, or will it cost money?

DeafAtheist 5pts

Let me clarify why this kind of exclusive content is aggravating & no one should support it regardless of what platform you choose to game on. As an owner of both a PS3 & Xbox 360. I have no problem whatsoever with exclusive games. If that game appeals to me enough it's worth buying the console it's made for for me that's Uncharted & The Last of Us. Sure I wish those were 3rd party games because I'd rather play them on Xbox, but the fact that they are not available on Xbox means my only option is to play on PS3 if I want to play them so there's no conflict.

I also have absolutely NO problem with timed exclusives either. It means if I care enough about the content I can choose to get the game for the console it will be on 1st or I can get it for the console I want and if that happens to be a console that has to wait 3-6 months for the content to be available on my console that's also no conflict because eventyally it will be available to all.

That brings me to permanent exclusive content. This is aggravating & anti-consumer because it forces you to either buy the game for the console you do not want to play it on or not play it at all. The point of 3rd party gaames is that everyone can play them regardless of their chosen platform. Putting permanent exclusive content on 1 platform takes away that choice because you are no longer getting the same game regardless of your chosen platform. Go ahead and call me an "Xbot" just because I prefer the Xbox despite owning both, but the fact is I would not support this practice even if it was Xbox that was getting it. If these misions were on the Xbox instead then I'd not buy the Xbox One version I am pre-ordering. I'd hold out until I can afford to get a PS4 and buy it on PS4 instead even tho I prefer Xbox. If I wanted to play the missions I'd do what I do with PS3 now... rent a copy from Gamefly just to play them. I refuse to financially support permanent exclusives regardless of which platform they are exclusive to.

Everyone should feel that way but no, unfortunately as long as it doesn't impact someone negatively they won't care. Like you guys calling us "whiners". You'll happily accept it because it doesn't impact you negatively, but I would be willing to bet that if the shoe was on the other foot it would bother you just as much as it bothers me now even if you didn't complain about it online.

Clint 5pts

Hey guys, remember before the world was a bunch of spoiled pricks that scan the web for stuff to bitch about, when games were just games?? Ahh the good ole days..

Eric 5pts

xbox gets exclusives all the time playstation rarely gets exclusives but yet the minute we get something for ourselves xbox fans start whinning xbox has so many games and early add-ons and all of that playstation network has so little ubisoft even gave xbox the tyranny of king washington stuff early to xbox it really makes no sense

Momo 5pts

I don't understand why people have a problem with exclusive content being targeted for specific gaming platforms. If the console maker and the software company have a good working relationship it only makes sense to have such exclusive content. It is called exclusive content for a reason. There is no law or moral code that should compel a company to make Bonus material available on all platforms. These are only one hour long missions anyway that are not central to the main point of the game. We are talking about luxury items for entertainment not food or other necessaries items of survival.

Geno 5pts

I don't get why everyone whines about the smallest of things as of late. Before PS and Xbox was ever around everyone didn't whine when dealing with Dreamcast or Nintendo or Sega Saturn for that matter. Now that PS and Xbox is around people are always whining over something. "It's not fair!" Or say something of "Why does that console get all the good stuff". Every company that creates some kind of video game nowadays caters to console of their choice. Deal with that fact, things are how they are. If you don't like it just buy both consoles and stop whining over it.

Ted 5pts

You Xbots are unbelievable! If it was the other way around you won't hear a peep besides fapping on the family dog. Many games have exclusive content on the Xbox, but now that the Playstation is getting some it's all of a sudden anti-consumer well how f*cking convenient!

@DEAFATHEIST Don't try feeding people your "I got both consoles bullsh*t. You very well know that you have a 360 only, and the way you are so defensive towards it gives my statement more credit.

DeafAtheist 5pts

I have to agree with what others have said. 3rd Party games being made for multiple platforms should have IDENTICAL content across all platforms. I have no problem with a 3rd Party company making an entire game exclusive to one platform, but to give 1 platform exclusive missions in a game that is not being shared among all platforms is indeed an anti-consumer policy... it alienates a large percentage of the company's consumers... it says to the rest of us that Ubisoft cares more about Playstation owners than Xbox owners. It's like a parent with 2 children always giving one of their kids extra cookies. It's favoritism. It would be more acceptable if the exclusive content was timed... like Xbox got the GTA IV DLC missions before PS3 or Xbox getting COD DLC before PS3... the difference is that PS3 does eventually get the same content. If it wasn't for the fact that Assasin's acreed is one of my favorite franchises I'd boycott this idiotic practice by not buying it for either console.

logical 5pts

Did the xbox owners evr stop to think that Playstation get these exclusives because they can hold more data on their discs? BluRay discs can hold between 25-50GB of data, where XBox only has DVD support and limits them to about 7.8GB... makes sense not to punish playstation owners for not limiting themselves with a DVD drive....

Zonned 5pts

Why does ubisoft continue to punish non-playstation owners by not giving everyone the bonus content? Its really not fair to the rest of the players on other platforms.

Sverdar 5pts

PlayStation exclusive?

Well, tl;dr then.

So are these missions a prequel to liberation ? Like black flag is to 3. If so then why does it state she will be older, coz in prequel she should be younger

Exclusive missions.....

What a bullshit, sorry. Make a multiplatform game or don't. But don't punish customers with policies like that. Do you something like business philosophy and integrity or is MONEY the only thing you care about? Aweful....

it feels like sony has betrayed ps vita i have seen the video the new fight moves and the graphics. i wish ps vita had the samething that ps4 had. i just want y'all to make a new assassin creed for ps vita.

Jonathan 5pts

Just get the game on the PS3 and stop bitching already! I have both for the very reason that some games get exclusive content. I have no problem getting it on the Xbox or PS3, but it seems that you do. You're a typical bias fanboy that even if you own both consoles (supposedly) you can't bring yourself to playing one. How sad and just pathetic the gaming community has become. I'm almost certain that you won't even complain if the Xbox had exclusive content, which btw it will with the release of South Park and The stick of truth. The Rise of Mysterion quest will only release on the 360 and I'm 100% certain that we won't hear a peep from you about how anti-consumer Ubisoft is. Like Ted said, how convenient. I'll definitely pick up AC 4 on PS3 and South Park on the 360 I'm sure you'll never bring yourself in doing that.

DeafAtheist 5pts

Early access is NOT the same as permanent exclusives. Xbox has NONE of those. Yes Xbox gets a lot of early access content but that is NOT the same thing as getting content that will NEVER be shared with other platforms. If this content was just early access stuff none of us would be complaining about it. Fact is Xbox STILL doesn't have access to any of the exclusive AC content Sony got with the last few AC games.

DeafAtheist 5pts

Just because the Avaline missions aren't necessary to my survival I shoudn't complain about unfair treatment? Or just because the missions only add an hour or 2 of non-essential content? I should be perfectly okay with the fact that I'm getting less game for my money than you are?

winter 5pts

Some people can't afford or don't want to buy both consoles. I'm getting a PS4 when the price drops, but I like the ONE more. Also, what if your on PC and hate consoles? Or just prefer one console over the other? Why should people be forced to buy something?? Also, a lot of people here act like PC doesn't exist... Why?? o.O

winter 5pts

What do we get that is exclusive? Only thing I can think of is CoD DLC, which eventually gets on everything after like a month. This will never be released on X360 or PC. Also, it's not possible to have a X360 and PS3? Wow, never knew someone could only buy one. -.-

DeafAtheist 5pts

Look up DeafAtheist on Raptr dude. I wouldn't lie about owning both consoles. Despite my preference for Xbox Naughty Dog is my favorite game developer & Uncharted is my favorite game series. The Last of Us is even better. PS3 has better exclusives (I HATE Halo & Gears) but Xbox is just a better console.

DeafAtheist 5pts

I'm not complaining as an Xbox owner... I had both consoles this generation. I could have bought the last 3 AC games on PS3 if I wanted the extra content Ubiosoft keeps dishing out for Sony, but I refused to let Ubisoft's favoritism motivate my purchasing decisions. I don't support the used game market much... 90% of the games I buy are new, but since I chose to buy 3rd party games on Xbox I just rented a copy of the AC games for PS3 that had exclusive content... I'm not buying a 2nd copy for that. If Ubisoft was fair across all platforms then I'd have beeb more willing to buy a copy for both consoles, I just refuse to financially support such console favoritism.

winter 5pts

Also, what about PC? Why aren't they on PC?? Makes no sense for it to be PS only. It would make sense not to punish PC over all. I'm not a PC gamer, but everyone knows there's no way to beat PC gaming, especially if you have a really good gaming computer. So does it make sense now?? -.-

winter 5pts

The ONE has Blu-ray Discs you know. -.- The reason the 360 didn't is because Sony bought it. -.-

Tom 5pts

Why do you think it's a prequel? Jill Murray says it takes place a long way after Liberation finished and Aveline is a lot older. It it a sequel, not a prequel.

Aiden Pearce

I know you're annoyed about the console exclusive missions, but please try to refrain from the unnecessary cursing. Your point can still be made without the curse words.

Thanks. ~A.

winter 5pts

Seems like you didn't read his comment well enough, or are just really stupid. -.- We shouldn't have to buy two games on two different consoles just because of it or buy it on something we don't like. Honestly, the PS3 controller ruins AC for me, and that makes me a fanboy, and him wanting to play DLC for a multiplatform game on a console it wont be on makes him a fanboy. It's pathetic that it's hard for me to play AC with the PS3 controller. Nice. This is the second problem I've had with Ubisoft, the first being the collectors edition for AC and other Ubisoft games being exclusive to Europe, even though there is worldwide fans who don't want to have to pay almost triple on ebay just to get something they love. Ubisoft is kind of making me mad, since I love AC SO MUCH!!! :( We in the US, and many other places have out money ready for the collectors editions of your games, Ubi... Please, for the fans.

DeafAtheist 5pts

Excuse me for caring about fair treatment for all. I don't have my PS3 anymore. I had to trade it in to help pay off my Xbox One on preorder. I couldn't afford it otherwise. But I'm not not voicing my opinion on this issue for my own benefit. While I did used to have both consoles until a few weeks ago not everyone does. I intend to eventually get a PS4 probably around the time Naughty Dog releases the next Uncharted title. I don't care about any of the PS4's launch titles enough to get a PS4 at launch. But like I said, not everyone is fortunate like us to have multiple consiles during a console generation... while I could have chosen to get the PS3 copy of the games for that content, the point is I shouldn't hve to. I only used my PS4 for Sony exclusives. I don't want to play 3rd party games on the PS3 or PS4 for a couple reasons... 1) I only have a handful of friends on PSN while on XBL my friend list is nearly full so buying on PS3 or PS4 means not being able to play with friends that don't have a PS3. 2) I absolutely loathe the PS3 controller... If I didn't love Unchrted & The Last of Us as much as I do I'd not even bother getting a PS4 & I'd have traded in my PS3 years ago... that's how much I hate the console. So I don't want to be forced to buy a 3rd party game for a console I hate just because it has an hor or w of extra content not available on my preferred console. As for South Park I didn't know about that. I have no plans to buy the game, but I'll probably rent it. I doubt the exclusive content will stay exclusive though... Microsoft isn't in the habit of doing that. This is why PS3 eventually got the GTA4 DLC. So I'd bet anything that the content will eventually be available on PS3. But no, I would NOT be okay with it if Microsoft had permanent exclusive content either. I do not support the practice at all regardless of which platform it is exclusive to and I will not knowingly buy a game with exclusive content on it.

winter 5pts

EXACTLY!!! I stated earlier that the only exclusives I know are timed, referring to CoD's DLC. I don't think we have gotten any actual exclusive stuff... -.-

DeafAtheist 5pts

Not to mention the fact that the exclusive Playstation missions in Assassin's Creed have ALWAYS been downloads, not on disc content so the DVD drive on the 360 makes no difference.

Dan 5pts

Aveline being older in Black Flag than she was in Liberation makes no sense to me.

AC 3: Liberation takes place between 1765 and 1777 so as to work in tangent with the main AC 3 which takes place 1760 to 1783.

AC IV: Black Flag stars Edward Kenway, the grandfather to AC 3's protagonist Connor Kenway, thus meaning that it will take place before the events of AC 3 where Haytham (Edward's son, Connor's father) is already in his prime.

Therefore, for Edward to be as young as he is in the gameplay released of Black Flag already, it is near impossible to envision how Aveline could return and be older than she was during Liberation.

LC 5pts

I'm sorry about the cursing. I was (and I am) just angry about this anti-consumer politics. That's not how game development should be. That's a pure money driven apporach and I can't support that.

Leonardo 5pts

An adult hates an inanimate object, how original. Anything you say from now on is trash since you pretty much admitted you're a fanboy. It never was an opinion but a sad display of fanboyish behavior. Have yourself a fantastic day....

winter 5pts

They are? Ha, well then that's one more reason. :)

Tom 5pts

The MAIN game with Edward is a prequel to AC3 in that it takes places in the Golden Age of Pirates in the early eighteenth century. The bonus content in this SAME game (the PlayStation exclusive content) featuring Aveline is a sequel to Liberations. They are two separate story arcs. Look at it like this in terms of chronology:

AC4: Black Flag--------------------------> Aveline DLC (early 18th century) (maybe 1770s/1780s?)

AC: Liberations (PSVita) AC:3

(1750s/1760s) (1770s/1780s)

Hope this helps clear up the confusion. I know, it kind of puzzled me a bit too until I mapped a timeline out for myself.

whatever 5pts

Aveline wasn't born yet during the time Black Flag takes place.

Scott 5pts

I get the impression that she's not going to be in the actual ACIV setting, but at your Abstergo co-worker's computer – a co-worker who is working on Aveline's time period.

Alen 5pts

y sin plata no te sirve para nada. Para algo vendes alguna cosa, para tener alguna ganancia.

whatever 5pts

It's not really anti-consumer. It's not like this costs more to the player. Besides, it makes sense to only give these missions to the Playstation side because the character that is featured in them in exclusive to the Playstation side.

DeafAtheist 5pts

I did no such thing. I am no fanboy. Simply hating a particular console, does not make one a fanboy. A fanboy sticks for a preferred console for no logical reason other than brand loyalty. I'll have you know I have valid , logical reasons for hating the PS3. A fanboy is someone that is so passionate about their preferred choice that thwey won't even try playing on any other system. I've owned both consoles this gen & having played on both I find the PS3 to be substandard in comparison. First of all the obvious is the controller. I hate the fact that the PS3 doesn't have proper triggers. Bumpers make piss-poor triggers compared to Xbox's LT & RT. I also loathe the parallel sticks... Xbox's layout is much more comfortable for long-term gaming. I am also a deaf gamer so I require text messaging to communicate online since I can't hear voices on a mic. This makes a chatpad as necessary for me as a headst is for other gamers. Xbox's chatpad is perfect. PS3's is crap... being mounted on top makes typing on it awkward and uncomfortable especially when you add the fact that the buttons are smaller than Xbox's and closer together. Xbox's text messaging service is also much more user-friendly than PS3's Hell you can even bypass the text messaging completely & chat over MSN instead with a window that just pops open on the screen without having to go into the menu button options. Xbox's dashboard is much better too, but compared to the other stuff that's a minor issue. I also have specific reaasons for choosing to get an Xbox One at launch instead of a PS4... the obvious being the controllers being largely the same next gen with similar layouts. The only obvious difference is PS4's touchpad, but it still has the gawdawful parallel sticks & crappy bumpers without proper triggers... beyond that Xbox has more features on it that interest me, namely the instant switching stuff and the multitasking with Snap. The only thing PS4 has that I like better than Xbox One is the 15 minute continuous gameplay recording compared to Xbox's paltry 5 minutes.

Scott is correct. Aveline's memories are accessible via your coworker's computer. Her missions are set after Liberation. So no, Aveline was not born when Black Flag takes place.

LC 5pts

It's anti-consumer because it's content that would be available to every gamer out there (regardless of the platform s/he owns) if pure money-based decisions wouldn't prevent that.....

And if they want to cater specifically to the playstation they could just make another game. I want an equal treatment on every platform.
